The responses are written in blue. Q.1 How long have you lived in the area? Q.2 How far would you need to travel to visit the community centre? Q.3 How would you get to the centre? 1. We need a Community Centre. There is nothing in our area for the youngsters and oldies. Please may we have a Centre which will cater for the disadvantaged groups. 2. I live in a rural area about 20 miles away 3. Ideally placed for me 4. I am blind with a guide dog, so access for any disabled people would be important 5. We need community centre's more then anything else in Abergavenny 6. I am moving into town very soon and really looking forward to REAL community centre. As the building could have been taken up years ago the local town council has lost out on an income, consequently the place has fallen into a certain amount of dilapidation. 7. No transport apart from buses or trains. 8. It would be brilliant to have something right here in town. I would use it lots. 9. I’ve just recently moved to Crickhowell from Abergavenny, which is why the distance is now over 5 miles. An active community centre is a much needed facility in Abergavenny - so many great ideas and brilliant minds working in isolated pockets - this centre would fill in the gaps. Q.4 [For numbers & activities see end of survey] From the following, list the activities etc which might benefit you or family members 1. Creative writing 2. Singing workshops 3. A 'one stop shop' for the community 4. Bingo, indoor bowls, billiard, bridge club 5. A great place for young carers to hold meetings as at the moment we have to travel to Monmouth 6. A support group for parents of children with disabilities 7. Computer classes, evening/ afternoon classes 8.To use as a venue for community choirs workshops and gong and sound bath sessions 9. Conservation benefit ie rescuing the fabric of a major building and re-using it by and for the local community Q.5 In what ways could the centre help you? 1.I'd like to run creative writing courses & this would be the perfect place for it 2. Meeting space for local groups 3. Space for teenagers to socialise 4. Just a belonging exercise meeting people 5. I work my business from home, I would benefit from occasional room hire for meetings/ training etc. 6. By giving me a focus - my family doesn't live near me. I feel I have a lot to offer 7. Having finished the Abergavenny Tapestry, I find I have no ultimate aim in life 8. To meet like minded people, to make new friends, to share information Q.6 Which of these things would help you to be involved in the centre on a voluntary basis. 1. I am director of a company and have little spare time to commit to regular volunteering work 2. Being blind I would need assistance/ support 3. It is important, young and old should be brought together 4. Too old for volunteering 5. I am 66 years old female and would be interested in child care, helping in the kitchen, cafe, support any youth activity, cleaning, social events - that would suit me 6. I would volunteer 7. It would not be possible for me to volunteer on any regular basis due to demanding family and work requirements. I would be able to give time on an event by event basis. Q.7 Do you feel part of the community? 1. Member of a community choir 2. Not yet! 3. I do feel isolated because of my sight. Sometimes I need to be approached 4. I feel the process has gone on for too long. We really need this community centre. We don't want more housing, we need more sharing and coming together 5. But Park street is not my immediate community 6. This community means a lot to me, as it was the community I grew with and I will never forget. 7. Yes. This is where I started my education, my daughter attended this school, have always lived in Abergavenny. I needed this community when fundraising for my youngest daughter. Abergavenny did help so much. 8. We don't live here very long 9. We go to the Methodist Church. 10. I have only been here for 5 years, have a complicated family life, and my friends and social outlets are sort of isolated pockets in my life. Q.8 Which of these describes your present living situation. Tick as many as apply... 1. Voluntary work and activities 2. I live with my wife. I am 69 years and my wife is 13 years younger. We are both slightly disabled . 3. No family support locally Q.9 In your own life how concerned are you about the following 1. Concern = interested, not necessarily worried 2. I feel we are doing quite well, but we would like very much to get together with the community. I go to blind club and Church. Q.10 All things considered how satisfied are you with your life as a whole nowadays? 1. A place to dance regularly would be good. And it could provide a centre for interchange of ideas between voluntary organisations and mutual help. 2. I like being involved and useful 3. By providing a venue for community activities, therefore encouraging healthy social life and community interactions - good all round 4. By providing a venue for shared arts and community activities for all ages. 5. Bringing people together reducing fear, providing a purpose, caring for people, having fun, intergenerational activities 6. Clean streets, less rubbish, chewing gum, dog poo, more bins. Family coffee mornings, children’s play area 7. I think any facility for the community is positive 8. Flexibility to provide 9. Whilst perhaps not helping me personally, I feel this country in general is losing its sense of community and any attempt to encourage people to get together more is applaudable. 10. I believe it will bring a sense of well-being and community for people of all ages. People will make friends and bringing us closer. 11. It would bring the community closer together. I think it would build a wider community and encourage more open mindedness and a greater understanding between the young and the elderly and should become the hub of society. 12. A meeting place for the different generations, that is my sense of what it could be 13. It would improve our lives by giving us a social life. Many of our neighbours are not friendly. 14. I think the community centre would improve many things in Abergavenny. I can remember when I was a little girl going to school here. It would be good to see something good coming out of it. Well done, you are doing a great job! 15. The community centre could enrich life for all ages in our community, it is very sad to see Park St School as it is today. I have been educated here and worked from 2000 until closure. Coming back today and seeing it brings tears to my eyes. 16. It would be good to have an centre to meet with people, get to know folk in the community 17. It could improve a sense of wellbeing in the community by creating a much needed space where people can come together. 18. A good opportunity if a Community Centre could be established in Abergavenny, so that it unites the community to gather and share 19. More then helpful community 20.When I move into town very soon, I want a community centre I can attend where there are people of all ages and interests. Sharing their skills and friendship. 21. Meeting other people and supporting each other 22. By encouraging communication and support of each other 23. Enhancing a sense of community overall with a recognised hub! 24. By providing the community with an art space where people could learn and pick up new skills in a fun and experimental environment. By setting up local art studios and print workshop. Most people especially children learn and benefit from hands on experience 25. Opportunities to develop skills in socially and environmentally responsible careers and link them to potential employers/funders. 26. By keeping the energy and the momentum within the community and providing a heart-centre for growth, that would ensure our community grows and changes to fit in with life in our society in these times. it would support those of us who are interested in us to create a way of building an aware, healthy, tolerant and harmonious community. 27. To overcome people's isolation and to offer an opportunity for those who are in a more fortunate situation to help improve the lives of others. 28. By being a focus for community activities, a resource for an increasingly isolated and fragmented society, a place where people feel part of something good 29. By being an attractive asset that provides a hub in the community for various activities and breathes back life into the building. 30. A dependable "third place" would enhance any individual's or a community's well being. 31. By ensuring that we have the skills within the community to deal with the big problems that are likely to face us in the future from climate change, peak oil, economic depressions etc. 32. It would improve the community of Abergavenny greatly. Abergavenny desperately needs somewhere like this centre. 33.It could help me and my family to become an integrated member of the wider Abergavenny community. It could help with the sharing of information regarding health care, education/ work opportunities, food co-op, claiming benefits etc., use of local facilities, making new friends. 34. I am a self employed tutor and want to find cheap space to host classes 35.I want to know more people and get more support with bringing up my young children. I don't have family nearby and am new in the area, so need somewhere to meet people and build up networks. My children are too old for local playschool and nursery groups so I can't get to know people that way, the way most other mums in this area seem to have done.
