| From The Beginning To The End...Chronicles memories and history of the School and contains fascinating references to life and times in late Victorian Wales. It brings the school day to life with accounts of 'acceptable' corporal punishment, the workhouse children and absence due to epidemics, prevailing weather conditions and... the visiting Fair! Documented chronologically, the reader is given insight to the attitudes and conditions prevailing in the run up to the death of Queen Victoria and continues to draw the reader in right up until the schools' official closure in 2005. Published in December 2006 the book is the joint voluntary effort of Alison Newsam, library manager and Ros O'Donaghe, teacher at the School for over 20 years. Copies can be obtained through Abergavenny Library at a cost of £4.50. Proceeds from the book will be gifted to Cantref Primary School who are bringing generations together by inspiring inter-generation projects. In September 1894 The Bishop of Llandaff opened the Christ Church Infants School. The following account in local newspaper The Chronicle describes the fabric of the new building:- ... "The building is very attractive in appearance. The main walls are of old red sand-stone, from the Govilon quarries, the windows and other dressings being of Bath stone, the best Portmadoc slates being used in the roofing. ...." In 1902, for the princely sum of £3,700 the school transfered from The Church in Wales ownership to The Abergavenny School Board. A Covenant to hold monthly Sunday School meetings remains on the building to this day. In March 2002, Phase Two "MEETING THE STANDARDS" of the overarching "Strategic Review of Education" made recommendations which included closure of several schools in Monmouthshire, Park Street Infants School was one of these. The school bell rang for the final time in July 2006. Charlie Lesbirel of year 2T had the honour of ringing the bell. Mrs Spittle was awarded the bell as a token of appreciation for her longterm service to the school as 'dinner lady'. Note: Children of the town now either attend new build - Deri View Primary School in Lansdown ward or Cantref Primary School - remodelled Harold Road School in Cantref ward. Cantref Primary School continued to use the building for a futher year while Harold Road School was remodelled. In 2008 Llanfoist is due to commence a new build 210 pupil Primary School. |
